Our History

Kenneth F. Brown (1919 – 2014): Founder

In his 1991 note of welcome, Friends of the Future Founder Kenneth F. Brown wrote:

During the 1980s, I observed, and participated in, the increasing diversity of forces converging on the Hawaiian Islands…economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual; they feel overwhelming…”

How will development happen, and who will it meaningfully affect?”

And “from a long lifetime in the islands,” he saw an answer…

Involve the people of Hawaiʻi.”

Friends of the Future is the result of that imperative.
